Our international Land Use division focuses on avoided deforestation, sustainable forest management, and sustainable agriculture. We have developed some of the world’s largest carbon projects including the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project, which is North America’s largest Improved Forest Management project and the world’s largest forest carbon project by area, as well as the Mai Ndombe REDD+ Avoided Deforestation project, the largest of its kind in Africa.

We work with private sector clients as well as government agencies and civil society to develop carbon projects in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Our Land Use division’s core competencies include:

  • Land Use Carbon Quantification - Over the last 13 years we have successfully validated all types of land use carbon projects including Avoided Deforestation, Afforestation/Reforestation, and Improved Forest Management.
  • Community-Based REDD+ Design - We have designed, implemented, and managed projects in partnership with indigenous stakeholders, bringing carbon revenue to marginalized groups in Central Africa, Colombia, and Canada.
  • Smallholder Agriculture Systems - In partnership with our not-for-profit partner Taking Root, we work with smallholder farmers, using carbon revenue to incentivize the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices and connecting farmers to markets for sustainable commodities.
  • Climate Finance - With a focus on cocoa, coffee and timber, we implement sustainable agroforestry systems for clients throughout Latin America.

Analyst – Clean Technology and Industrial Innovation

Role Description:

We are seeking a highly self-motivated and passionate individual to join our Clean Technology and Industrial Innovation team as an Analyst. This individual will support the identification and structuring of new carbon projects across a wide range of emissions reduction activities and sectors, including transportation, built-environment, renewable energy, industrial processes, biofuels, plastics and packaging. We are seeking someone who is a business-minded technical specialist that thrives in a dynamic entrepreneurial environment. This is a full time position, reporting to the Director of Clean Technology and Industrial Innovation.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing strategic and technical support to the clean technology projects sourcing team for the voluntary and compliance markets.
  • Gathering market intelligence and supporting business development.
  • Evaluating the feasibility of emissions reduction opportunities through research, analysis, and preparing feasibility assessment reports.
  • Assessing environmental benefits of clean technologies in accordance with relevant standards, protocols, and crediting systems.
  • Supporting project design and develop Project Design Documents under both compliance and voluntary offset systems.
  • Contributing to quality assurance / quality control through document review.
  • Supporting team members in other duties as requested.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g. Sustainability, Environmental Management, Applied Sciences, Business)
  • Minimum of two years of professional work experience, demonstrating a combination of technical and business acumen.
  • Knowledge of various emissions reduction technologies and a clear passion for clean technology.
  • Good command of evolving climate policy and regulatory landscape.
  • Strong numerical aptitude and ability to interpret highly technical data in order to solve complex analytical problems.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with carbon markets, carbon project development.
  • Experience working in an industrial setting, and ideally familiar with multiple sectors, such as chemicals, mining, built environment, transportation, or biofuels.

    Qualitative Research Analyst – International Land Use

    As part of the international land use team, the Analyst will play a key role in the development of a variety of forest carbon projects types, including Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) projects, sustainable agricultural interventions, and afforestation/reforestation. This role requires a strong understanding of issues around the science of climate change, as well as land use and natural resource management dynamics in the global south. The Analyst will also be responsible for administrative and other support tasks, such as business development and proposal writing. This is a full time position, reporting to the director of international land use.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Forest carbon project development:

    • Developing Project Design Documents for forest carbon offset project projects under voluntary market standards such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Gold Standard.
    • Supporting project social and biodiversity impact assessment processes to standards such as the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCB).
    • Assessing the feasibility of prospective forest carbon projects through desk-based and field research, and preparing feasibility assessment reports.
    • Liaising with clients and field teams in Latin America, contributing to ongoing management of operations in Latin America, and providing English-Spanish translation in meetings and deliverables
    • Preparing workshops and presentations for clients and partners to support project development.
    • Assisting the technical team with geospatial and carbon quantification tasks on an as needed basis
    • Developing proposals for funding and consulting work for the international land use team
    • Assisting the director with budgeting and financial modeling on an as needed basis
    • Contributing to quality assurance / quality control through document review
    • Coordinating internal and external meetings.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelors degree or higher in environmental science, forestry, agronomy, political science or related field.
    • Solid understanding of forestry and land use dynamics
    • Solid understanding of climate policy
    • Written and spoken fluency in English
    • 2+ years of relevant professional work experience
    • Very strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Willingness to travel internationally in challenging conditions up to 20% of time

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Experience with carbon markets, carbon project development
    • Experience and proficiency using the ESRI suite of products
    • Knowledge of biometrics and/or Geoinformatics
    • Field experience with forestry, agronomy, silviculture.
    • Good command of evolving climate policy and regulatory landscape
    • Experience building and maintaining relationships with clients and partners
    • Fluency in Spanish
    • Experience working internationally
    • 5+ years of professional work experience

    Forester – Domestic Land Use

    As part of the domestic land use team, the Forester will assist in the project design and development of forest carbon offset projects across North America, support validation and verification management, manage methodology development and support the domestic land use team.

    This role requires a strong understanding in forestry management, carbon dynamics and issues around the science of climate change and climate policy in BC and across Canada. Knowledge of US carbon markets is an asset. This is a full time position, reporting to the Director of Domestic Land Use.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Support development of new forest carbon offset projects including project design, development of risk assessments and development of monitoring requirements under provincial and federal carbon programs.
    • Working with Indigenous People on Indigenous led project development
    • Support verification management of existing forest carbon projects
    • Assessing the feasibility of prospective forest carbon projects through desk-based and field research, and preparing feasibility assessment reports.
    • Assisting the technical team with geospatial and carbon quantification tasks on an as needed basis
    • Support field work related to inventory updates, development of monitoring plans and other aspects related to forest carbon offset project development
    • Contributing to quality assurance / quality control through document review

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in forestry
    • Field experience working in BC’s forests
    • Solid understanding of soil science, and land use dynamics
    • Basic understanding of carbon modeling
    • Written and spoken fluency in English
    • 5+ years of relevant professional work experience
    • Project management experience
    • Very strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Experience with MS Office Suite

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Experience with carbon markets, carbon project development
    • Knowledge of issues related to climate change, land use, Atmospheric Benefit Sharing Agreements
    • Professional Forester designation (or in process)
    • Experience with CBM
    • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples
    • A Master’s Degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field
